Samsung has discontinued Samsung I9000 Galaxy S and has replaced it with Samsung I9003 Galaxy SL, here is the difference:

  • Sumer AMOLED display is replaced by Super Clear LCD. Resolution remains the same.
  • Slight heavier 131 grams vs. 119 grams.
  • Preloaded with Android 2.2, while Galaxy S has 2.1 but is upgradable to 2.2
  • Has 16G storage, while the Galaxy S has 8 or 16.
  • 1GHz Hummingbird (Samsung) processor is replaced by TI, speed remains the same.
  • Battery has been bumped up from 1500mAh to 1650mAh, that answers the increase in weight.

Final Thoughts:

I don’t see much change in specification,  If you are using Galaxy S, you need not upgrade. If you are planning to buy a new one, you could get a good deal on Samsung Galaxy S. You can always add additional memory if you need and change the battery to 1650mAh.. since battery life was one big complain for Samsung Galaxy S users.

Samsung Galaxy S is available on Amazon for $539.

Intel CEO Paul Otellini agrees with me :)

Otellini said Nokia’s Chief Executive Stephen Elop received “incredible offers — money” from Google and Microsoft to switch.

“I wouldn’t have made the decision he made, I would probably have gone to Android if I were him,”

Otellini said Nokia would find it hard to differentiate using the Windows platform: “It would have been less hard on Android, on MeeGo he could have done it.”

After the Motorola Atrix which runs both Android and a Linux based OS, ARM showcased a TI OMAP4 based phone that runs Ubuntu and Android.

Todays phones have become powerful enough to as a phone as well as provide basic PC functionality. This should get more PCs accessible to People, as more people today have mobile phones than PCs.

Motorola has finally launched the Defy in India. This is 3 months after it was launched in US by T-Mobile. Motorola is improving, some of their other phones, took 4-5 months to be launched in India. Lets hope they launch the Atrix sooner in India.

Motorla Defy

Here is whats cool:

  • Waterproof, scratchproof, dust proof. Should I say child proof ;-) ?
  • 3.7″ touchscreen  display
  • 5 Megapixel Camera with Video recording
  • MicroSD Card slot for additional Memory
  • 3G with HSDPA 7.2Mbps
  • WiFi
  • MicroUSB for charging (This is soon becoming a standard)
  • 3.5mm standard headphones jack
  • AGPS and Digital Compass
  • Accelerometer, Proximity Sensor, Light Sensor
  • Android 2.1 with Flash player, this will get upgraded to 2.2
  • FM Radio

What would be nicer:

  • Device should have shipped with 2.3 or atleast 2.2, no word yet on when it will receive 2.3 update
  • Gyroscope for the gaming enthusiast
  • Xenon flash for indoor night photography for the party animals
  • HSDPA+ with 14.4Mbps
  • AMOLED display.

Nevertheless its a nice phone for its price. Its available for Rs 18,900 at Croma.

A cool looking phone from Google. Bbuilt by Samsung, hence the similarity to Samsung Galsxy S.

Here is what I like:

  • Android 2.3 (first and currently the only phone to have this)
  • 16GB Internal Memory
  • 4″ Display
  • 1 GHZ Processor

Here is what I don’t like:

No expandable memory slot, Whith 16 GB built in, you may not need it..but why not have it?

Only HSDPA 7.2Mbps, No HSDPA+ which offers 14.4 Mbps

Motorola has managed to come up with a very good concept. Its essentially a very powerful phone, which can be converted into a PC or a netbook. This will provide a serious competition to the iPhone4 and also provide a single device which can double up as a PC or a netbook.

It has two docks which are optional accessories

  • The Motorola HD Multimedia Dock has three USB ports and an HDMI port enabling connections to a keyboard, mouse, speakers and HDMI-compatible monitor for working at your desk/office, or connecting to an HDMI-compatible television and home theater audio system for interacting with content and enjoying video, music, games and more in your living room.
  • The Motorola Laptop Dock has an incredibly thin design with an 11.6-inch screen, full keyboard, stereo speakers, 36Wh three-cell battery that delivers up to eight hours of battery life and weighs just 2.4 pounds. Users simply dock their Motorola ATRIX 4G into the back of the Laptop Dock to turn it into an active, connected machine to experience true mobility at work, home and playing on-the-go in a form factor that’s lighter and smaller than most laptops on the market.

A while back, my friend Ramnath forwarded me this interesting flow chart, It holds true for iPad and may apply to many of our wants [not needs].

A few people who owned iPads, [althought many would not admit], were finding their iPad had diminishing marignal utility. After a few days of use, they were not find much utility for it.

Are tablets good computing devices or just for browsing and viewing? Are tablets going to replace the netbook? Well lets wait to have more tablet options based on Android platform. In fact Android team says Android is not designed for Tablets and Android 3.0 expected by end of the year, is expected is suppose to be tablet ready.

Nokia has serious competition with Videocon, Mcromax, Acer and Motorola launching sub $200 (Rs. 10,000) phones in India.

India already has the 2nd largest number of people accessing the internet from their cellphones.

Android should fuel this market as:

  • Its fast.
  • Its excellent at multi tasking.
  • Its easy to use.
  • It has over 50,000 applications in the app-store.
  • Its an open platform.
  • You have choice of vendors.
  • It has good integrations with Google services: search, mail and apps.
  • And yes it runs Linux :)

    From a Newsweek article:

What began as a trickle now has turned into a tidal wave. In August Google announced it was activating 200,000 Android phones each day. On at least one day since then, that number surged to more than 250,000, Rubin says. Android now has leapt past Apple to become the biggest smart-phone platform in the United States, the third-biggest worldwide, and by far the fastest growing.

Microsoft last week sued Motorola, alleging its Android phones violate Microsoft patents. Similarly, Apple has sued HTC over its Android phones, and Oracle has sued Google, alleging Android itself violates Oracle patents. If nothing else, the lawsuits demonstrate that rivals recognize Android has become a serious threat.

“In terms of sales, smartphones powered by Android are expected to surpass these of Symbian as early as 2012,” he said, reports the Telegraph.

Its time Nokia considers offering Android based phone.

“If Nokia joins the Android party, the support of this eco-system by all key players could help the mobile smartphone industry to potentially commoditise its software business much like what Microsoft did in the PC world,” he said.

If Nokia continues in its current strategy, it would be addressing “niche markets,” Kamal-Saadi added.

What happens when a Taiwan ODM (Original Device Manufacturer) starts making their own phone? Result is you get good value for money, it start selling well and as a result they also get sued!

For those who came in late, ODMs are the actual manufactures of the device sold by the likes of Apple. ODMs actually make the devices and these are branded and sold by the big MNC brands.

HTC is  an ODM for many big brands. For example they manufactured the Google Nexus One for Google which is similar to HTC Desire. They have now been releasing their own phones.

They are so successful, that Apple sued them for patent infringement cause they enabled multi-touch on their phone and actually did a better job than Apple did on its iPhone.

HTC the number 1 brand as per GSMArena,  has launched some nice  phones to give customers a choice:

    • HTC Wildfire
    • HTCL Legend
    • HTC Desire

Here is whats common between them:

    • 5 Megapixel Camera
    • LED Flash
    • 3G with HSDPA for upto 7.2Mbps download speeds (network dependent)
    • Wi-Fi
    • Stereo Bluetooth
    • GPS receiver
    • FM Radio
    • Touch screen with Multi-touch support
    • Proximity sensor
    • Accelerometer
    • Optical Trackpad
    • Flash Player
    • 3.5mm standard audio jack
    • Unlimited phonebook (limited by memory)
    • MicroUSB
    • Limitations: No front video camera for video conferencing. No Qwerty keyboard.
    • All of them Run the latest Linux based Android 2.1 and are expected to be upgradable to 2.2 this quarter.

    Android 2.2 will add:

    • HTML 5
    • Flash 10.1 support
    • Faster speeds due to JIT compiler

Now here is the main difference between the three:

    Features
HTC Wildfire HTC Legend HTC Desire
    Display Type
    TFT AMOLED AMOLED
    Display Resolution 240×320 320 x 480 480 x 800
Display Size 3.2 Inches 3.2 Inches 3.7 Inches
Internal Memory 384 MB RAM 384 MB RAM 576 MB RAM
CPU 528 MHz Qualcomm 600 MHz Qualcomm 1GHz Qualcomm
    Weight 118g 126g 135g
    Price $379/Rs. 15,000 $495/Rs. 21,000 $659/Rs. 26,000

The main difference between these phones are processor speeds, display quality and the price. The Legend and the Desire sports an AMOLED display which is the latest LED display, which is razor sharp.  The Desire also sports a slight larger display of 3.7 inches with the highest resolution. It also bundles a 4 GB MicroSD Memory Card. The processor speed is not so important if the OS works well and you don’t need to run too many apps simultaneously.

    Here is my suggestion:

If you want an Android phone but not willing to shell out a bomb, the Wildfire is your best bet. Since the Wildfire is the latest amongst these, it also has some newer features.

If you don’t have budget constrains and wants to show off to your iPhone friends, then go in for the Desire. Its will also do justice in video playback capabilities. The Legend is ofcourse for people who want the best of both worlds: Lower cost than desire but with better display than the Wildfire.
