Blueprints: Natty Bug Handling

  • I am reviewing the items this week (had planned to do last week, but didn’t get to it) to determine what, if any, items need to be postponed or require further discussion at UDS. There are several items that are relatively straightforward and simply need to have the time allotted for them to be completed. I’ll plan and implement that schedule for myself also this week.

Status: General Natty

Beta-1 is this Thursday, March 31. Beta-1 will ship with the 2.6.38-7.39 kernel which is based on mainline v2.6.38. Do not expect any further uploads of the kernel until after Beta. In the mean time we’ve been queueing patches in the master-next branch including rebasing to the most recent 2.6.38.2 stable update. Also keep in mind that Kernel Freeze is April 14, ~2weeks away. After kernel freeze we will transition to our SRU policy when submitting and accepting patches. See:

I’d like to also note that Kernel Freeze is also the same date as Beta 2. Any uploads beyond that would likely have to be of the kitten killing nature.

Status: Stable Kernel Team

We are extending the verification phase of this kernel cycle to two weeks in order to resync with master Natty interlock schedule.

Due to a shortage of testing resources and testing required for the upcoming Natty release, there will not be a normal two-week kernel release cadence for the next few weeks. The schedule is as follows:

kernel (maverick, lucid) -) proposed 3/25
verification in progress this week
hw cert/qa – 4/1-4/7
kernel (maveric, lucid) -) update 4/7
kernel ( maverick, lucid?)-) proposed 4/22
verification 4/25-4/29
hw cert/qa – 4/29 – 5/5
kernel (maverick, lucid? ) to update 5/5

  • We will complete verification (or revert of patches) by this Friday for the current kernels.

  • We will have no uploads on the 8th of April, effectively skipping one of the two week cycles that we have been on.

  • We will upload Maverick and Lucid to -proposed on Friday, April 22

We still have not found the root cause of a build failure for the hppa architecture for the Hardy linux-backports-modules package. This must be understood and resolved before we can release the Hardy kernel packages, so if it is not resolved by the end of this week we will have to delay the testing phase for Hardy until we understand it.

Status: General Natty

We’ve uploaded the 2.6.38-7.38 kernel which is a no change upload to rebuild against the recent compiler update. I do not expect any further uploads of the kernel until after Beta. Note that Beta freeze is this Thursday.

Status: Stable Kernel Team (sconklin / bjf)

Last week, all kernels except Dapper completed QA and certification testing, and were released. Dapper has now completed testing and should be released soon.

New packages have been placed in -proposed, beginning another cycle. However, due to the upcoming Natty release and insufficient testing resources, it is expected that further SRU kernels will not be released until May. However, the stable kernel team will continue to hold to a normal two week cadence, and complete verification of fixes for each cycle until release testing can resume.

Status: General Natty

The natty kernel is now at v2.6.38-6.34 (v2.6.38-rc8 based). We have had some instability due to compiler changes from Linaro, but seem to be coming out the other side. v2.6.38 dropped today and kernels are in test prior to upload. We remain concentrated on bug squashing for Natty. One area of concern is an interaction between vesafb and drmfb during boot, in some cases we are triggering gpu hangs; a prototype startup wherein we load vesafb later
is in test. We are closing in on Beta-1 freeze which is a week on thursday.

Status: Stable Kernel Team (sconklin / bjf)

  • This week is the start of yet another stable kernel release cycle. I’m in the process of getting git repos in shape and packages put together.
  • A request for feedback has gone out regarding the kernel SRU workflow. The proposal can be found at: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/kernel-sru-workflow

Status: HW Cert. Team

This week we finised testing both the Maverick and the Lucid kernel. Results are publicly available:
All the 75 systems passed the SRU tests (the minor errors are problems with the script themselves).
So, from our side, they are good to go.
We updated the tracking bugs with this information as well.

Incoming Bugs: Bug day report

Last week’s bug day was a success. We had several individuals helping to triage new state bugs and we got a number of them triaged and into the proper status. The next bug day will be next Tuesday. The focus will be on bugs in the confirmed state.

Triage Status

There is always tremendous interest in having me look at a particular bug here and there. I am still working to get these interested parties to approach me in the pulblic channel versus currently getting pinged in private windows. We have had some further interest in working bugs from individuals geared toward beginning device driver and module work. As much as it pains me, we had to explain that bugs were likely not the best way to go to get into module development. :-)

Kernel Bug Day Tuesday, March 8th 2011

Hi Folks,
It is that time again. Time for our regularly scheduled Bug Day [0]. Like last time we will be focusing on the bugs in the new state. We had a great amount of work done last time, and I’d like for us to keep that momentum going. There are a number of these bugs that have been improperly set to New when they should be either Triaged or Confirmed. My goal is for us to get as many of them properly set as possible. Additionally, we’d like to perform our basic triage on the ones that are, in fact, new. This includes a brief review of the information that has been provided and a request for what is missing so that we can get as many as possible into the triaged state for further review by the team.
I’d like to take a moment and thank those people on the team for working on the bugs with patches that we have. Through their efforts the number is the lowest it has been since I started here. There has also been quite a bit of effort put into continual review of the regression-proposed bugs. We now have them in a good place. All of this is due to the extra effort the team has put in, in addition to the massive amounts of work they normally do to achieve this. Thanks guys for your efforts. :-)

Parties interested in beginning triage or if you have questions about what to do, or if you just find yourself stuck on a bug and are not certain how to continue, please reach out to me in the #ubuntu-kernel channel on FreeNode. I’m always there, and I am always willing to help. :-)

    • I will not likely get to this before UDS, but if I do, I will update the status then.
  • develop process for handling, validation & closure, and document in the wiki:INPROGRESS

    • I still have a bit of work to do on this. I didn’t have the time over the past week to complete it.
  • drive existing bugs with patches list to zero and keep it there:INPROGRESS

    • My thanks to those of you who have been working on this. The list continues to drop significantly every week.
    • Other items in the list didn’t get looked at this past week. I have time scheduled this coming week to address them and, hopefully, close them out.

Status: General Natty

The natty kernel is now at v2.6.38-5.32 (v2.6.38-rc6 based). Overall we have most of our development out of the way, with just the ecryptfs long filename work ongoing. We are currently concentrating on bug squashing for Natty. One area of concern is an interaction between vesafb and drmfb during boot, in some cases we are triggering gpu hangs; upstream says “don’t do that”. We are currently in freeze for Alpha-3. We are waiting on -rc7 which should be imminent, planning to upload it as soon as freeze lifts.

Status: Ecryptfs

No real progress – postponed for natty. xattr version still waiting for review, some work on in header version

Status: Stable Kernel Team (sconklin / bjf)

We are in the middle of preparing kernels for a new cycle and uploading them to our PPA. We had planned to complete this last week but were delayed by a possible regression in the last set of kernels undergoing testing. This turned out not to be a regression, and we are free to proceed. We plan to have all the remaining packages uploaded today.

Incoming Bugs: Bug day report

Last week’s bug day was a success. We had quite a number of bugs reviewed. Many changed states. I had the opportunity to take a closer look at the arsenal script we use to process these and there is some work continuing there to make that script work better. The next bug day will be next Tuesday. I had originally hoped to have one today, but I couldn’t get everything ready and announced in time, so I will announce for next week.

Triage Status

We have had quite a bit of interest in the periphery on bug triage. I have been fielding a few requests in #ubuntu-bugs about the proper level of information needed in bugs as well as the occasional private request. As always, I am recomending that interested parties inquire in our channel on #ubuntu-kernel so that others can benefit from the knowledge sharing.
