Blueprint: kernel-maverick-apparmor

Submitted next revision to lkml and issued pull request for Maverick, it includes bug fixes for Bug #599450, Bug #581525.

  • (ubottu) Launchpad bug 599450 in linux (Ubuntu Maverick) “[apparmor] getattr handled incorrectly in 2.6.35-6.7″ [High,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/599450
  • (ubottu) Launchpad bug 581525 in apparmor (Ubuntu) “Lucid: system becomes unstable randomly, seems related with apparmor” [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/581525
Remaining work items are mostly userspace, and will be sorted out in the next week

Blueprint: kernel-maverick-misc

Nothing new to report.

Blueprint: kernel-maverick-new-kernel-on-lts

Still tracking Maverick. No known issues.

Blueprint: kernel-maverick-pv-ops-ec2-kernel

Pulled in recommend XSAVE patch from Fedora kernels, and we are building kernels that will only work with pv-grub or modified ami’s. Kernels are in testing and currently available at:

  • git://kernel.ubuntu.com/jj/ubuntu-maverick/pvops
Have also set up test kernel with pv-on-hvm drivers from amazon compute cloud. There are two versions, the unmodified drivers, and the v6 version that is being pushed upstream. I need to spend more time evaluating each but v6 seems the correct one to use atm.

Blueprint: kernel-maverick-config-review

Only major change is we’ve enabled CONFIG_M686 per blueprint:foundations-m-686-compile

Blueprint: kernel-maverick-bug-handling

The date for the Triage summit is set. It will be on the 11th of September between 10AM EST and 2PM EST. The classroom will be for the instructional sessions in order to allow leverage of the Lernid tool. We have decided not to use the kernel channel other than for wiki development. I’ll be sending an e-mail on Wednesday to the parties we want to have deliver this training.

Blueprint: kernel-maverick-upstart

Testing at the Maverick Rally show threw up a bug in the the readahead tracking patches. This was resolved and we now have a near final patch set. This will be pushed to kernel-team list this week for review.

Blueprint: kernel-maverick-bios-test-automation

Recent changes since last meeting:

  • automate fwts ISO build (for USB keys)
  • check msr registers for nx bit, check nx bit across all CPUs
  • fix typos in man page
  • –batch-experimental, –interactive-experimental options
  • –show-tests reports tests based on –interactive, –batch flags
  • virt: more understandable results output
  • mcfg: improved test failure explanation
  • battery: more thorough, make test interactive
  • s3: add variable delay between each S3 iteration
  • investigate 2TB BIOS disk limits

Status: Maverick

The Maverick kernel saw some significant changes last week while at the Platform Rally:

  • We updated to CONFIG_M686 per the foundations-m-686-compile blueprint.
  • The toolchain saw a last minute update which introduced a serious issue where i386 kernels would no longer boot. Luckily an upstream patch to resolve the issue has been isolated and applied.
  • We rebased the Maverick kernel to the latest 2.6.35-rc6 mainline kernel and uploaded, ie 2.6.35-12.17.
Considering all the changes, please be sure to help test.
Alpha 3 is Thurs Aug 5th which is ~1week away. Any patches that are to land in the Alpha3 kernel need to be submitted and garnered the appropriate Ack’s *before* this Friday (Jul 30). For those that have already sent patches, I’ll be applying them today.
Also, please note we are significantly above the Alpha 3 burn down chart’s trend line. Review your list of work items for Alpha 3 and start closing out tasks asap. If your work items won’t be completed by the milestone, re-target it or mark it POSTPONED.

All proposed packages have moved to updates. Awaiting security release anytime
soon. Since there has been some weird testing problems on Lucid fsl-imx51 we
will hold back that kernel however all other kernels are being uploaded.

Blueprint: kernel-maverick-apparmor

  • Bug #599450 – more complicated than originally though due to semantic issues. atm done with kernel side, current plan is to handle rest user side.
  • Bug #602261 – looks to be AppArmor exacerbating Bug #600359. Have applied a kernel patch that should reduce this by adjusting AA policy memory allocations, and have also applied some patches to user space tools reduce memory usage.
  • Bug #581525 – Partial kernel fix in place, still triggers in one case that is currently being examined. Userspace portion of fix is being tested.
  • Next submit is queued, and ready to go out pending regression tests that are running on the updated rebase.

Incoming Bugs: Bug day report

The Community bug Day next week has been canceled due to the Platform Rally. It will resume the week after the Rally. I’ll be sending an e-mail update next week concerning the items that we will be focusing on. Also, it was determined that there is a need to hold our Kernel Tema Bug Day earlier in this week due to the travel time needed to arrive at the Platform Rally. We will be holding the Team Bug Day tomorrow, Wednesday 14 July. The expectation is that all platform kernel engineers will look at a minimum of 5 bugs each. The day will start at 8AM PST and run for about 3 hours. This is so that we can chat about the bugs being worked so as to avoid duplicating any efforts.
there is a calendar item for the bug day tomorrow.

Open Discussion or Questions: Anyone have anything?

  • Please note that there will not be a Kernel team meeting next week.
  • There is a kernel triage chat tomorrow afternoon at 4PM EST any Kernel Engineers interested in backing me up are welcome to attend :). https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDeveloperWeek -) more info there
  • Launchpad bug 594837 in linux (Ubuntu) “Lucid SRU: Intel Core i3/i5/i7 hang on resume from suspend (SCI_EN)” [High,In progress] https://launchpad.net/bugs/594837

    • This is still pending review at stable@kernel.org (4 weeks). I think this affects a good number of users who would like it fixed in Lucid sooner rather than later. I think its a safe fix (its in Maverick).
    • Is it time for us to SRU this for Lucid or shall we continue to wait for stable?
    • lucid is now undergoing a security update, so it’ll be a while before we can put anything new in there.

Agenda

2010-06-15 Meeting Agenda

Open action: manjo to send a firewire patch with test info

tgardner uploaded the latest package of module-init-tools which contains the switch. pgraner and I have tested the new stack, and I have also tested this in Lucid and found to perform better than the old stack. pgraner did tests with dvgrab, kino, and files transfer across HDDs, and all checked out ok. Thanks to pgraner for all the testing. Jfo will issue a call for testing soon. Since this item is all done we can have this item removed from the meeting agenda.

Open action: JFo to put out a CFT on new firewire stack

Will send out today.

Blueprint: kernel-maverick-apparmor

Fixed Bug #581525 both kernel and user space and am about to push out test kernels for reporters to verify. Have a patch for Bug #599450 that needs to be tested. Bug #602261 has been reported as a potential AA issue, looking into it. We have some compiler patches that reduce memory usage that will get synced with alpha3. Looking into duplicating and the bug and seeing if it is AA.

  • [[https://launchpad.net/bugs/581525|Launchpad bug 581525 in apparmor (Ubuntu) "Lucid: system becomes unstable randomly, seems related with apparmor" [Undecided,New] ]]
  • [[https://launchpad.net/bugs/599450|Launchpad bug 599450 in linux (Ubuntu Maverick) "[apparmor] getattr handled incorrectly in 2.6.35-6.7″ [High,New] ]]
  • [[https://launchpad.net/bugs/602261|Launchpad bug 602261 in linux (Ubuntu) "Thrashing and OOM during upgrade from 10.04 to Maverick" [Undecided,Incomplete] ]]
(apw) Notes that that bug occurs when running lucid (pre-update kernel). (jjohansen) Agrees, though it is likely userspace component since the compiler consumes 80-100MB.

Blueprint: kernel-maverick-firewire-stack

See open action item above. This blueprint topic will be removed from future agendas.

Blueprint: kernel-maverick-misc

Some work on cleaning up lintian errors is ongoing. Nothing else to report.

Blueprint: kernel-maverick-new-kernel-on-lts

Nothing new this week.

Blueprint: kernel-maverick-pv-ops-ec2-kernel

Have update Xen patchset, that I will start testing today. Amazon have opened their pv-grub based loader for general use so I will be revisiting the pv-ops based kernel.

Blueprint: kernel-maverick-ubuntu-delta-review

Since we won’t be using union-mounts in Maverick, we’re planning an aufs update for Alpha3.

Blueprint: kernel-maverick-union-mounts

Based on the lack of feedback we will assume staying with aufs2 for Maverick. Preparations to update aufs2 are in progress. This blueprint topic will be removed from future agendas.

Blueprint: kernel-maverick-config-review

We have 2 misc bugs to close for Alpha3. Both are already assigned to a kernel dev and In Progress.

Blueprint: kernel-maverick-bug-handling

Nothing new this week.

Blueprint: kernel-maverick-upstart

The ureadahead patches remain untested. Will bring this up with foundations.

Blueprint: kernel-maverick-bios-test-automation

Status: Maverick

linux-2.6.35-6.9 was uploaded immediately upon Alpha2′s release. I expect the upstream 2.6.35-rc4 kernel to land relatively soon. We’ll of course rebase our Maverick kernel at that time.
Alpha 3 is Thurs Aug 5th which is about a month away. We are towering over the Alpha 3 burn down chart’s trend line, so please review the list of work items for Alpha 3 and start closing out tasks:

Lucid has been reuploaded with a proposed kernel that addresses a lot of ext4 issues. If all goes to plan this gets moved to updates soon enough to have a security update before Jul-28 which is the first point release.

Karmic is still not accepted because of the abstracted.debian backport. As there is a security update pending we need to eihter get someone take the risk and accept it into proposed, or we need to revert everything and get the minimal changes uploaded. Though the security update would be based on the version currently in updates, I think it would require a very careful merging back and together with the branches needing special care cause the whole validation of the builds being void.

smb    tgardner, pgraner Would you think that Steve would take that risk if you asked him?
  tgardner    possibly
tgardner    especially after we show that the binary packages are identical
smb    tgardner, Would you take the action of talking to him, then?
  tgardner    smb, sure
  smb    ok thanks

Incoming Bugs: Bug day report

Community Bug days will resume next Tuesday. The focus will be on Fix Committed bugs. We will be looking to ensure that Fixes that were committed were in fact released so we can set their status appropriately. I’ll be sending out an e-mail announcing this tomorrow.
We’ll again be having the Team Bug Day over Friday and Monday as half days
